About Us
We're interested in stories. Nobody tells a story about a class that asked nothing of them.
Midnight Hour comes from the work that happens where nobody sees. The long hours chasing a movement, late night practices, terrible first attempts, long conversations after class because no one's ready to go home yet. This is what our community is built around. We'll push you to do one more turn when you're about to give up. We'll get you back on the floor for one last dance after a bad night. When something's not working, we'll ask you to try again. Not to make dance harder, but because becoming a good dancer IS hard. Our teachers are the type of people who don't stop learning, so we may as well do it together. Those "holy shit, I just did it" moments always feel better when you've given one last push. But it's not only the breakthroughs. A first class. A friendship that started on the dance floor. A performance. A late night practice that finally clicks. Every one of those started with someone deciding to try something they weren't sure about, before they felt ready, because nobody ever is. And that discomfort is kinda the point. We're not just getting better at dancing, we're practicing getting better at doing uncomfortable things. These are the stories we're interested in, and we think there should be a lot more of them
Manju Chiu
Manju is a dancer, teacher, and community organizer based in Vancouver. She co-runs Midnight Hour with David, creating progressive dance programs and events that span Hustle, Argentine Tango, Brazilian Zouk, and more. Together, they organized the Speakeasy Summer Series, featuring weekly socials with different partner dance styles, and continue to run progressive classes that grow the local community. Manju also leads unique Hustle programmings such as Hustle-Oke and Passive Progressive, that helps shape other Hustle events in Vancouver, blending creativity with thoughtful community-building.
Maddy de la Rama
Maddy was introduced to Hustle in 2017, where she discovered a passion for connection, musicality, and the feeling of Hustle. Inspired and encouraged by those around her, she began to train and develop her love for the dance. Having learned from a variety of teachers across many dance forms, she has developed confidence in her movement and personal style. Since then, she has continued to grow as a dedicated dancer, sharing her knowledge, creativity, and positivity with the community around her.
David Chen
David is a Vancouver-based dancer, teacher, and event producer with a focus on building the Hustle and Argentine Tango communities. He is one of the founders of Hustle Van Jamme (HVJ), which has grown from a grassroots gathering in 2019 to an international festival featuring workshops, socials, competitions, and panels. Beyond HVJ, David co-runs Midnight Hour, a developing studio brand that produces progressive programs and socials across multiple partner dances, and he helps lead Collective Tango, a platform dedicated to promoting Argentine Tango in Vancouver. His projects bring dancers together through both high-quality training and memorable community experiences.
Aaron Truong
Aaron has been dancing Hustle since 2018. He took his first class with Savage & Samuelle and instantly fell in love with the dance. He has travelled to compete and learn all across North America. Aaron continues to practice and refine his dance and wants to share his passion and love to others!
Nicole Chan
Nicole found tango in 2012 and has been captivated ever since. She started teaching in the winter of 2023, and it quickly became one of her favorite parts of tango life. There's nothing she loves more than watching a newcomer feel the embrace click into place, and teaching has deepened her own dancing by forcing her to understand what she does instinctively well enough to pass it on. For her, tango is both remedy and revelation. In a world that pulls us toward isolation, it asks you to be fully present with another person. It has also taught her to connect with herself, on and off the dance floor. By 2025 she was organizing milongas and events alongside fellow team members. Whether she's leading a class or hosting a night of dancing, her mission is the same: to help others fall in love with tango, one embrace at a time.
Jayden Jang
Deasung (Jayden) Jang has been dancing Argentine Tango since 2016 and teaches in Vancouver alongside his dance partner, Nicole. He began in Korea under a Korean maestro trained in Argentina, and draws on the Tango de Salón, Milonguero and Nuevo traditions. At the heart of his approach is the belief that tango is a conversation created through the body. As a teacher, he focuses on the principles behind movement rather than memorizing steps: walking, weight transfer, posture, and how the body communicates intention between leader and follower. The goal is movement that feels natural and uniquely the student's own.
Sian Gu
Sian came to Brazilian Zouk and Lambada from Chinese folkloric dance, salsa, and other Latin styles, and has spent a decade exploring flow, playfulness, and expression with a distinctly Pacific Northwest flavor. A 2026 winner at the Berlin Lambada Festival, Lyon Zouk festival, and Toronto Infinity festival, Sian taught across Canada and internationally before joining Midnight Hour Dance School in Vancouver.
Shawn Cheng
Shawn began his dance journey in street dance, focusing on popping, hip hop, and locking before discovering Hustle in 2014. He quickly fell in love with social dancing, eventually teaching and playing an active role in growing Vancouver’s Hustle community. His passion for partner dance eventually led him to Brazilian Zouk and Lambada. Since then, Shawn has taught and competed in Canada and internationally, earning wins and placements at Canada Zouk Congress, Elevation Festival, Dallas Zouk & Lambada Festival, and LambaFest. He is passionate about teaching and helping spread Brazilian Zouk and Lambada wherever he dances.
I'm a total beginner!
And we love you for it. Our core training Starter programs are built for absolute beginners. No experience, no problem.
Do I need to bring a partner?
Nope! Come with a partner or come solo. Both work! We rotate partners in class, and we do it often.
Do you offer trial classes?
The first class of our core training Starter programs is open as a trial. After that, you'll decide whether to commit to the rest of the series.
To sign up for a trial class, go to the Schedule page and click Sign Up Now on the class you want.
On the checkout page, select Drop-In (First Class Only). Once payment goes through, you're registered!
What should I wear?
Anything comfortable and breathable that lets you move. Dancing gets warmer than you'd expect, so a change of clothes and a sweat towel aren't a bad idea.
For shoes: please bring a pair of indoor shoes if you can. Comfortable, and not too grippy. Smooth soles let you turn without your feet fighting you. Your knees will also thank you for it. And indoor only shoes keep the floor clean for everyone.
Are there practice sessions?
Yes! Every class in the core training program is followed by a practice session with instructors there to help. Bring your questions, work through anything that didn't click, or just get extra reps in.
What if I miss a class?
We don't offer makeup classes at the moment, but the practice sessions are the next best thing. If you miss a week, come to the next one and ask. That's exactly what it's there for.
Where are the drop-ins and pop-ups?
We're working on it! Pop-ups happen whenever the stars align. We'll post them here and on our socials as they come up. Sign up for the newsletter to hear about them first.
