Argentine Tango
Nothing happens. Then everything does.
Tango is a conversation in movement, a dialogue of pauses, steps, and breath. Originating in Buenos Aires, it's a dance of connection and intensity, where subtle shifts say more than big moves ever could. To the outside world, it looks dramatic and elegant. On the inside, it feels like an entirely new language, spoken only between you and your partner. Once you feel that connection, you'll understand why people devote their lives to tango.
What a class looks like
We start with walking. Not a warm up you rush through, but the thing itself, because tango is built on how two people move together in a straight line before it is built on anything else. From there we work through the vocabulary of the dance, one idea at a time, with plenty of practice and rotation so you dance with different people. Classes run about 75 minutes and finish with open practice.
Do you need a partner?
Nope! Most people show up solo. Rotating partners is standard in partner dance classes, and it's better for everyone. You end up learning the movement itself instead of one person's habits. We'd love for you to bring a friend, but there's no need.
What to wear
Anything you can move comfortably in. Smooth soled shoes help, since dancing often involves pivots and a sticky sole works against you. Proper dance shoes can wait.
Argentine Tango in Vancouver
There is a real tango community here with milongas and practicas that happen almost daily. Part of what we do is prepare you to walk into one of those rooms understanding the etiquette of the dance and enough of the dance to start dancing with people and enjoy it. See the schedule for what is currently running.
