Brazilian Zouk

Fluid • Expressive • Trancelike

A conversation carried on waves.

Brazilian Zouk is one of the most fluid and immersive partner dances. Originating in Brazil, it evolved from Lambada and found its identity in the way it stretches music into motion. Where other dances are sharp, Zouk bends. The body movement feels like water, and the signature head and hair movements look like they're happening in slow motion. It's expressive, intimate, and endlessly creative. Once Zouk hooks you, it makes every other dance feel a little too stiff.

What a class looks like

We start with the basic steps and the connection. Zouk moves through the whole body, so before any pattern makes sense, you need to feel how a lead travels from one person to another. From there we work on the vocabulary, the basic travelling steps and the way one shape flows into the next. We give plenty of practice time and rotations so you dance with different people. Classes run about 75 minutes and finish wtih open practice

Do you need a partner?

Nope! Most people show up solo. Rotating partners is standard in partner dance classes, and it's better for everyone. You end up learning the movement itself instead of one person's habits. We'd love for you to bring a friend, but there's no need.

What to wear

Anything you can move comfortably in. Smooth soled shoes help, since dancing often involves pivots and a sticky sole works against you. Proper dance shoes can wait.

Brazilian Zouk in Vancouver

The scene here is young and growing, with more people organizing socials and bringing in out of town teachers for mini festivals. It's tight knit enough that you'll start recognizing faces quickly, and not only in Vancouver. The community often travels together to festivals across the Pacific Northwest, so the the community you meet here follows you well past the city.
